91传媒 celebrates research success with annual awards

STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥擬ississippi State is honoring more than 50 students, faculty and staff for their exceptional contributions to the university鈥檚聽research聽enterprise.听聽

The聽annual awards, given each spring, celebrate 91传媒鈥檚 research achievements聽by honoring faculty, staff and students from each of the university鈥檚 eight聽academic聽colleges, as well as 91传媒鈥檚 research administration,聽centers and institutes.听91传媒 is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as an R1-Very High Research Activity institution. With聽$244 million in research and development expenditures in FY2018, 91传媒 is the top research university in the state and is ranked in the top 100 nationally by the National Science Foundation.听

鈥淭he dynamic research聽activity聽taking place at 91传媒 makes a聽tremendous聽impact on our state, nation and world,鈥 said 91传媒 President Mark E. Keenum. 鈥淚t is inspiring to see聽the Bulldog family working every day to solve critical problems and create new knowledge.鈥澛

David May, professor in the Department of Sociology, is being recognized聽with聽the university鈥檚 top research honor鈥攖he Ralph E. Powe Research Excellence Award.听The Powe Award is a memorial to the 91传媒 alumnus and longtime research vice president who died in 1996.听The selection is made聽at the university level from nominations received from the 91传媒 community.听

May, who received his doctorate in sociology from 91传媒, has been a part of the university faculty since 2012.听He is active in research and service in community crime prevention and school safety work, reentry and other correctional issues for both officers and inmates, and cybercrime research. He has authored or co-authored six books and over 100 scholarly articles, and currently聽serves聽as聽principal聽investigator or co-principal investigator for research projects funded by the NSF, the U.S.听Army Engineer Research and Development Center, the Henry Family Foundation and the Department of Defense.听

鈥淚 would like to congratulate Dr. May and聽all of聽this year鈥檚 award winners,鈥澛爏aid 91传媒聽Interim Vice President for Research聽and Economic Development聽Julie Jordan. 鈥淥ur world-class research capabilities are a tremendous asset to the university and the state of Mississippi, and they provide excellent hands-on learning opportunities for our students. It takes聽hundreds聽of people working together to聽make all of this activity happen, and these awards are聽one way聽we聽can聽say 鈥榯hank you鈥 to everyone for their hard work and help.鈥澛

The Research Awards are presented annually by the Office of Research and Economic Development and the Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine.听Due to the COVID-19聽pandemic, the annual Research Awards banquet was聽canceled.听However, the banquet鈥檚 program, which includes winner bios, can be viewed online.听
